Promon creates Project Leonardo geared to higher levels of excellence in all aspects of its operations
30/04/2005
Project Leonardo was begun in 2003 by Promon, a company that offers infrastructure solutions for key sectors of the economy, to achieve even higher levels of excellence in all the services it provides. The project received financing from BNDES, the national development bank, under an agreement signed early in May. The project comprises a series of initiatives organized in three dimensions — processes, people and tools — and is coordinated by four competence centers that cover areas considered fundamental to Promon’s performance: engineering, construction and assembly, supply chain management, and project management. Project Leonardo deploys some 400 professionals involved in operating activities. “Our aim is to think broadly about work processes, identify gaps and make the necessary changes to achieve the desired level of excellence,” says project coordinator Milton Antelo. Among the outcomes of Project Leonardo to date in the process dimension are the enhancement and updating of technical and organizational procedures, and consolidation of a systems engineering approach geared to the pursuit of comprehensive solutions to clients’ needs. In the people dimension, results include implementation of an extensive program of training in behavioral competencies, technical competencies in various engineering disciplines, and project management, the latter in partnership with Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV). About 55 per cent of Promon’s staff will participate in the training program. In-house learning and knowledge management channels have been revitalized and amplified with highly positive results. According to Milton Antelo, the project’s success is directly linked to the involvement of Promon’s own staff. “They know the organization, its processes, and the complex markets in which it operates. They are better placed than anyone to identify weaknesses and create solutions to enhance operating agility, reduce costs, and achieve the desired levels of profitability and quality,” he says. The Communication Department provides fundamental support in disseminating the work done by Project Leonardo, helping to promote intense interactivity across the organization. News bulletins are posted to the corporate portal and events called Mastigando Idéias (“Chewing Ideas”) are held at which professionals from different areas come together to share information, swap experiences and present suggestions on affairs relevant to the organization. Promon has allocated an investment budget of some R$20 million to Project Leonardo, mostly relating to the cost of professionals dedicated to its development. BNDES financing accounts for 50% of the total. Inspired by Leonardo da Vinci — The creativity and genius of Leonardo da Vinci are a major inspiration for Promon. The project is named for this Renaissance polymath to underscore the organization’s unremitting pursuit of excellence through ever more knowledge and continuous improvement.
